A Local's Guide to Hurley: Silver Street History, Iron County Waterfalls, and the Iron Range

Hurley is a Wisconsin Iron Range border town twinned with Ironwood, Michigan -- known for its historic Silver Street saloon district, a county full of waterfalls, and deep-snow winters.

Hurley is a Wisconsin border town on the Iron Range, sitting right across the Montreal River from Ironwood, Michigan -- the two make one twin-city. Hurley's claim to fame is its rowdy past: the historic Silver Street saloon district was once one of the most notorious strips in the North, and the town still leans into that bar-town character. Around it are some of the best waterfalls in Wisconsin and a deep-snow winter playground.

What is Hurley known for?

Silver Street and waterfalls. Hurley's Silver Street grew up as a wide-open iron-and-logging boomtown bar district, and that lively, tavern-heavy character still defines downtown. The surrounding Iron County is waterfall country -- dozens of falls within a short drive -- and the deep Iron Range snow makes Hurley a snowmobiling and skiing hub in winter. The Paavo Nurmi Marathon, Wisconsin's oldest marathon, runs here each August.

Things to do in Hurley

Walk historic Silver Street for the saloon-town history, then chase waterfalls: Interstate Falls is one of the closest and most impressive, with many more across Iron County. Winter is snowmobile-and-ski season on the Range, and the Paavo Nurmi Marathon is the big August event. Pair it all with neighboring Ironwood, Michigan -- just across the river -- for the full twin-city visit.

Where to eat in Hurley

It's tavern-and-supper-club country. Iron Nugget is the busy local favorite, Pine Lake Lodge is the up-north supper-club experience, and Schneider's Trailside Pub and Bear Chasers Lodge cater to the trail crowd. El Tarasco covers Mexican, The Munch Bar & Tacos is the casual bite, Sharon's Coffee Company handles the morning, and the Iron Horse Inn and Bank Club Bar & Grill carry on the Silver Street bar tradition.

When to go

Winter is the big season -- Iron Range snow makes Hurley a snowmobiling and skiing hub with some of the most reliable powder in the Midwest. Spring and early summer are best for the waterfalls, when they run highest, and August brings the Paavo Nurmi Marathon. Fall color across the Range is excellent.

Planning your visit

Hurley is on US-2 at the Wisconsin-Michigan line, twinned with Ironwood across the Montreal River. Remember the time-zone quirk: Hurley is on Central time, Ironwood on Eastern. Many Iron County waterfalls are on gravel back roads, so allow drive time and check conditions. Bundle up in winter -- the snow here is the real thing.

The bottom line

Hurley is the Iron Range with a colorful past -- a historic saloon street, a county full of waterfalls, and deep northern snow. We surface what's worth the trip; you choose the falls. See what's on this week at the Lineup.
