A Local's Guide to Pensacola: Blue Angels, Historic Downtown, and National-Seashore Beaches

Pensacola is the historic anchor of Florida's western panhandle -- home of the Blue Angels and the National Naval Aviation Museum, a walkable old downtown, and the protected beaches of Gulf Islands National Seashore.

Pensacola is the historic anchor of Florida's western panhandle -- a Gulf city with deep Navy roots, a beautifully preserved downtown, and some of the most protected beaches in the country. It's the home of the Blue Angels, the site of one of the nation's best aviation museums, and an easy, rewarding day or weekend from the Alabama coast.

What is Pensacola known for?

Naval aviation. The National Naval Aviation Museum on NAS Pensacola is the marquee -- a free, world-class collection of historic aircraft and the home base of the Blue Angels, whose practice flights you can sometimes catch overhead. The city is also one of Florida's oldest, with a walkable historic core around Palafox Street and the Seville district, and miles of Gulf Islands National Seashore beach on its barrier islands.

Things to do in Pensacola

Give the National Naval Aviation Museum at least half a day. Climb the Pensacola Lighthouse & Maritime Museum for the view, and head out to Fort Pickens on the Gulf Islands National Seashore for a 19th-century fort and undeveloped beach. Big Lagoon State Park is the quieter nature option, and downtown's Plaza Ferdinand and the historic UWF Trust sites anchor the walkable old city.

Where to eat in Pensacola

Downtown is the heart of it. Seville Quarter is the historic entertainment-and-dining complex everyone knows, Jackson's Steakhouse is the upscale Palafox table, and Khon's on Palafox and Graffiti Pizza cover a casual night out. Garden & Grain is the cocktail stop, Mathieson Brewing Company the local brewery, and out near Perdido the Flora-Bama Yacht Club brings the waterfront-bar energy.

When to go

Spring and fall are ideal -- warm Gulf water, lighter crowds, and comfortable downtown walking. Summer is peak beach season and busiest. Watch for Blue Angels practice days and shows, and Pensacola's lively Mardi Gras in February, if you want to time a visit to an event.

Planning your visit

Pensacola is about an hour east of Gulf Shores across the state line. The museum is on the Navy base -- bring ID and allow time at the gate. Pair downtown with a beach afternoon on the seashore, and note that Fort Pickens and the national-seashore areas charge a small entry fee.

The bottom line

Pensacola is history, aviation, and wide-open beaches in one city -- come for the Blue Angels, stay for the old downtown and a Gulf-island sunset. We surface what's worth the trip; you choose the flight path. See what's on this week at the Lineup.
