July 3–5in & around Coastal Alabama & Northwest Florida
The Fourth lands on a Saturday, and the coast is ready for it. Gavin Adcock brings his Day I Hang It Up Tour to the Wharf Friday night, the City of Gulf Shores lights the sky over Gulf State Park Saturday at 9, and Flora-Bama throws its all-day blowout on the line. Beach by day, fireworks by night -- that's the whole assignment. And the forecast is playing along -- wall-to-wall sun and a steady 90 from Friday through Saturday's fireworks, with only a slight Sunday shower to watch. Sunscreen, water, shade, repeat.
Friday
The Day I Hang It Up Tour pulls into Orange Beach to kick off the holiday weekend. Country, loud, and outdoors at the Wharf -- the big-ticket Friday night before the Fourth takes over Saturday.
If a stadium country show isn't your speed, the historic Saenger has the counter-program: a 90-minute documentary of the last surviving WWII B-17 crews telling the air war in their own words, on the big screen downtown. Fitting for the weekend, and air-conditioned.
Saturday
The main event. The city's official Fourth of July fireworks go up over Gulf State Park at 9. Stake out the beach in the afternoon, stay through the show -- this is where the crowd ends up.
The Fourth at the line, which means it's a marathon, not a sprint -- live bands across the stages, the beach bar in full swing, and a party that runs from afternoon into the night. Pace yourself.
If you'd rather do the Fourth with a real dinner and a water view, the Fish House is open and serving on the holiday. The sit-down, grown-up version of the day before the fireworks call you back outside.
That's the weekend.
