Chattanooga with Kids: A Family Day Downtown and Up the Mountain
How to build a family day in Chattanooga -- the Tennessee Aquarium, the Creative Discovery Museum, the Coolidge Park carousel, the zoo, and the Lookout Mountain trio up the hill.
Chattanooga is built for a family day -- and a lot of it is close together. The downtown family scene grew up around the Tennessee Aquarium, which opened in 1992 as the deliberate spark for the riverfront's revival, and the big kid-anchors cluster near each other along the water. Here's how to put a day together -- downtown first, and up the mountain if you've got a second day.
Start at the Tennessee Aquarium
The Tennessee Aquarium is the marquee. It's actually two buildings -- River Journey for freshwater, Ocean Journey for saltwater -- with something like 10,000 animals between them, plus an IMAX theater next door (a separate ticket). It's the priciest single stop and an easy half-day on its own, so plan the rest of the day around it.
Creative Discovery Museum
A few blocks away and walkable from the Aquarium, the Creative Discovery Museum is hands-on by design -- a STEM zone, a dino dig, and a dedicated area for the under-five set. Admission is good all day with re-entry, so it pairs naturally with lunch. Best for toddlers through elementary, and it can fill up on weekends. Hours shift seasonally, so check the day before.
Coolidge Park & the carousel
On the North Shore, Coolidge Park is free and made for kids -- an 1894 Dentzel carousel with 52 hand-carved animals and an interactive splash fountain that runs through the summer. One heads-up: the Walnut Street Bridge, the usual walking route across the river, is closed for restoration through late September 2026, so reach the North Shore by car or the Market Street Bridge for now.
The Chattanooga Zoo
For younger kids especially, the Chattanooga Zoo at Warner Park is easy to navigate and home to 500-plus animals -- a manageable couple of hours that doesn't demand the stamina the Aquarium does.
Up the mountain: Rock City, Ruby Falls, the Incline
If you've got a second day, the Lookout Mountain trio is the classic move -- but know it's about 15 to 20 minutes up the mountain (and Rock City actually sits across the line in Georgia), not a downtown walk. Rock City's kid magnet is Fairyland Caverns and Mother Goose Village, a storybook walk-through that's been there since 1932. Ruby Falls is a guided tour down to an underground waterfall -- worth flagging for anyone uneasy in tight cave spaces or pushing a stroller. And the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway is a funicular up one of the steepest passenger grades anywhere -- the ride itself is the attraction. All three are ticketed and the costs add up, so look for combo tickets.
Pulling it together
A clean first day: the Aquarium in the morning, lunch downtown, then the Creative Discovery Museum or Coolidge Park in the afternoon. Save the mountain for day two, when nobody's already worn out.
