A Local's Guide to LaFayette: Rocktown Bouldering, the Pinhoti, and Walker County BBQ
LaFayette, Georgia is the Walker County gateway to Rocktown bouldering and the Pinhoti Trail on Pigeon Mountain -- come for the rock and trails, stay for Walker County smokehouse BBQ.
LaFayette is the Walker County seat, a rural Georgia town tucked between Lookout and Pigeon mountains -- and the jumping-off point for some of the best rock and trail in northwest Georgia. Climbers know it for Rocktown; everyone else can come for the smokehouse BBQ and a quiet mountain-valley afternoon.
What is LaFayette known for?
The outdoors on its doorstep. Rocktown, high on Pigeon Mountain, is a nationally known bouldering area -- a maze of house-sized sandstone boulders that draws climbers from across the Southeast -- and the long-distance Pinhoti Trail runs through the same mountains. You don't have to climb to enjoy it: the trailhead is the gateway to big views and good walking either way.
Things to do in LaFayette
Head up Pigeon Mountain to the Rocktown Trailhead for bouldering or just a scramble among the rocks, and use the surrounding wildlife-management land for hiking. Back in town, LaFayette Parks and Recreation covers the everyday green space and ballfields. It's a get-outside, eat-well kind of day rather than a museum town.
Where to eat in LaFayette
BBQ is the move: Wardlaw's Lucky Eye Q is the local smokehouse name to know, with Geo's Smokehouse close behind. Los Guerreros is the busiest table in town for Mexican, Toki Hibachi & Sushi Steakhouse handles the hibachi craving, and The Crushed Tomato covers Italian. For something more old-school, the Station House of LaFayette and the drive-in Dari-Dip are longtime favorites, and the Vienna Bier Garten is the spot for a beer. Save room for Southern Bliss Bakery.
When to go
Spring and fall are prime for Rocktown and the Pinhoti -- cool, dry climbing and hiking weather. The Honeybee Festival in late May is the town's signature event. Summer is doable but warm on the exposed rock.
Planning your visit
LaFayette is about 35 minutes south of Chattanooga via GA-193 or US-27. Pigeon Mountain sits in a wildlife-management area, so check current access and seasonal rules before you go climbing or hiking. The town itself is small -- park downtown for food, drive the mountain for the rocks.
The bottom line
LaFayette is a climber's basecamp and a BBQ town rolled into one -- come for Rocktown and the Pinhoti, leave full. We surface what's worth the trip; you choose the route up. See what's on this week at the Lineup.
