A Local's Guide to Monteagle: The Caverns, Foster Falls, and Plateau Mountain Cooking
Monteagle sits atop the Cumberland Plateau with an outsized lineup -- The Caverns underground concert hall, Foster Falls, a Victorian summer colony, and the gateway to Sewanee and South Cumberland State Park.
Monteagle sits right on top of the Cumberland Plateau, where I-24 crests the mountain between Chattanooga and Nashville. It punches well above its size: a nationally known underground concert venue, one of the best waterfalls on the plateau, a Victorian summer colony, and the gateway to Sewanee and South Cumberland State Park. For a town this small, there's a lot of reason to pull off the interstate.
What is Monteagle known for?
Three things, really. The Caverns is the headliner -- a genuine cave turned concert hall that hosts nationally touring acts underground, the kind of show you plan a weekend around. The historic Monteagle Sunday School Assembly, a gated Victorian "Chautauqua" community founded in 1882, gives the town its summer-colony character. And the plateau itself -- waterfalls, overlooks, and miles of trail -- is the everyday draw.
Things to do in Monteagle
Catch a show at The Caverns if the calendar lines up -- it's the reason most people make the trip. For the outdoors, Foster Falls Recreation Area delivers a 60-foot waterfall and a swimming hole, and the South Cumberland State Park Visitor Center is the hub for the plateau's trail system. The University of the South at Sewanee, with its Gothic campus and Memorial Cross overlook, is a short drive and well worth it.
Where to eat in Monteagle
Jim Oliver's Smoke House Restaurant is the Monteagle landmark -- a smokehouse, country store, and lodge that's been the exit's anchor for decades. The historic stone High Point Restaurant is the special-occasion table, Mountain Goat Market is the beloved cafe-and-bakery for breakfast or lunch, and Papa Ron's Pizza & Italian Steakhouse covers a casual dinner. Depot Cafe and Mi Casa round out the everyday options.
When to go
Spring and fall are best for the falls and the trails -- the plateau is gorgeous and the swimming hole at Foster Falls is a summer favorite when it's hot. Check The Caverns' calendar first; a show date is the surest reason to time a weekend here. Summers up top run cooler than the valley, which is exactly why the Victorians built here.
Planning your visit
Monteagle is about 45 minutes northwest of Chattanooga up I-24, right at the top of the grade. It pairs naturally with Sewanee and the South Cumberland trails for a full day, or with neighboring Tracy City for a plateau-outdoors loop. Buy Caverns tickets ahead -- shows sell out.
The bottom line
Monteagle is a small mountain town with a big calendar -- an underground concert hall, a waterfall, and a Victorian summer colony all within a few minutes of the interstate. We surface what's worth the trip; you choose the show. See what's on this week at the Lineup.
