A Local's Guide to Trenton: Gateway to Cloudland Canyon and Dade County BBQ

Trenton is the Dade County seat at the foot of Lookout Mountain -- the gateway to dramatic Cloudland Canyon State Park, on the World's Longest Yard Sale route, and a genuinely good BBQ-and-Main-Street stop.

Trenton is the Dade County seat, tucked in the valley at the foot of Lookout Mountain in Georgia's far northwest corner. For most visitors it's the gateway to Cloudland Canyon -- one of the most dramatic state parks in the Southeast -- but the little town at the bottom of the mountain is a genuinely good stop for BBQ and a Main Street meal in its own right.

What is Trenton known for?

Cloudland Canyon and the mountain around it. Cloudland Canyon State Park sits on the western flank of Lookout Mountain, with deep gorges, two waterfalls, and rim overlooks; the canyon-floor access at the Sitton's Gulch Trailhead is right by town. Trenton also sits on the route of the 127 Yard Sale -- the so-called World's Longest Yard Sale -- which rolls through every August.

Things to do in Trenton

The headline is the outdoors. Hike into the gorge from the Sitton's Gulch Trailhead up to Cloudland Canyon's waterfalls, explore the cave at Howard's Waterfall Cave if caving is your thing, and use Jenkins Park as the in-town green space for a picnic or a stretch. Time a visit to early August and the World's Longest Yard Sale turns the whole corridor into a treasure hunt.

Where to eat in Trenton

Thatcher's Barbecue & Grill is the local smokehouse and the name to know after a hike. Jefferson's handles wings and oysters, Rafael's Italian Restaurant covers pizza and pasta, and Los 3 Amigos and Lalito's cover the Mexican craving. For an everyday plate there's Guthrie's Restaurant and Uncle Lar's Outpost, and coffee runs through Corner Coffee and Za Brew.

When to go

Spring and fall are prime for Cloudland Canyon -- the waterfalls run well and the gorge is at its best. Summer is good for the deeper, shadier trails; the early-August yard sale is its own kind of event. Winter is quiet but the overlooks stay open.

Planning your visit

Trenton is about 30 minutes southwest of downtown Chattanooga via I-24 and GA-299. The Sitton's Gulch route into Cloudland Canyon involves real elevation -- it's a climb back out -- so bring water and good shoes, and check park hours before you go. The town is small and easy to park in for a meal afterward.

The bottom line

Trenton is the front porch of Cloudland Canyon -- a dramatic gorge above and honest BBQ below. We surface what's worth the trip; you choose the trail down. See what's on this week at the Lineup.
